How to Play Bounty Trail
Click the dirt, watch energy, camp before you collapse.
Bounty Trail plays like a system map with a cowboy silhouette glued to the bottom of the screen. Henke described it as less physics, more clicking, leveling, and eating beans. That is not a joke about beans. Energy, camp, and inventory are the difference between a surrender at 57% and a hunter who cannot open the camp menu.
If you have not read the board yet, go back to Getting Started. This page is the HUD and the hands.
Mouse: click-to-go
On mouse and keyboard the trail uses a cursor-based click-to-go system. Official development notes from Henke say that system feels right with a mouse and got a separate direct-control option for gamepads because sticks felt clumsy. You point at a road, farm, or fog edge, click, and the horse rides. A store screenshot even shows the hand cursor on the map while a sighting reads “El Gato Terrible has been seen to the South West.”
You are not steering like a third-person action game. You are assigning a destination and paying in time plus energy. Distance prints at the bottom (one shot shows Distance: 1,2mi). Compass sits on the right. Fog of war hides the rest until you ride it.
Gamepad: direct control
The demo lists full controller support and Xbox controllers. Use that direct-control option if click-to-go on a stick feels like stirring soup. The office screenshot also shows a Select prompt in the corner, so menus are built for a face button as well as a mouse. Steam Cloud is on for the demo; do not assume a crashed camp is a lost career until you check the save folder.
Trail buttons you will actually press
The bottom bar in official shots labels:
- Ride — start or resume travel
- Stop — halt without opening camp
- Inventory — gear and supplies (the office copy tells you to look for supplies on the land)
- Esc Camp — camp menu, including sleep
Henke posted during the June demo that you could click Camp and Inventory in the lower left while in town when you should not be able to. That was a bug, not a strategy. Town and trail are different contexts. If a button highlights in town, do not build a routine on it until demo notes say it is intended.
Energy is a hard gate
The top bar shows Energy as a percent (examples: 77,5%, 76,0%, 51,5%). Demo players ran energy to empty and then could not select camp options. Henke uploaded a build on 15 June 2026 to fix camp and sleeping, and asked stuck hunters to look in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\September Games\BountyTrail. If you are on the full release and camp still refuses input, copy that folder out before you verify files.
Practical rule: camp while Energy is still a bar, not a memory. A Scraggyville overlay dated Thursday, September 8 prints the menu: Sleep (+15 Energy / −4 h), Have a look around (−30 min), Review recent events, Return to Agency, Options. Coffee on the trail is a separate recover: “Drank coffee. Recovered 20 energy. Perception increased for 2 hours.” The combat guide is useless if you arrive at the bounty on 0%.
Information, Gold, and the clock
Three other numbers sit on the trail HUD:
- Information — a word plus a number toward a clean arrest (Not enough (13), Mediocre (34) in Henke’s stills). This feeds Convince Bounty To Surrender. See capture alive.
- Gold — trail pocket money with comma decimals in the builds we have. Do not confuse it with office Money. See money.
- Day X / Y plus a clock — the hunt timer and the time of day. Day 3 / 3 at 12:38 is a hunter who is already out of calendar. Day 2 / 7 is a hunter who still has room to talk to farmers.
Time of day matters because camp/sleep is how you roll the clock. Burning daylight on empty fog is how 7-day posters become 3-day panics.
Office versus trail
The office is a date (Saturday, October 8, 1881 in the store shot), agency Money, Player Level, Experience, and the hunted / caught / killed tally. The trail is a short-clock mission with Energy and Information. Switching your brain between those two UIs is the skill. The debt tracker is for the office. This page is for the trail.
Combat is a menu, then a fight
When you find the bounty, the game does not automatically start a third-person gunfight. It puts up The Bounty / Time to make a choice, then:
- Convince Bounty To Surrender (percent chance)
- DRAW! (percent chance plus a bonus percent)
One official shot shows 57,33% surrender versus DRAW 53,19% + 10,00%. That +10 is why skills matter; read skills after you understand the buttons. If you pick DRAW, the silhouette work in the key art is kneeling with a rifle beside the horse. Treat it as a committed fight, not a quick-time skip.
Accessibility and specs
The demo lists four accessibility features and full controller support. Minimum PC specs are light: 64-bit Windows 7, dual-core CPU, 4 GB RAM, Intel UHD 630-class graphics, 250 MB disk. Details and the save path are on system requirements. This is a small build. If it stutters, it is more likely a UI bug than a GPU problem.
A clean session checklist
- Confirm the poster day limit in the office.
- On the trail, glance at Day, Energy, Information before every Ride.
- Stop at talkable locations; do not only drag the horse in a straight line.
- Inventory after loot, camp before empty Energy.
- At the choice screen, compare surrender percent to DRAW percent plus bonus.
- After the hunt, read Caught versus Killed on the office ledger.
From here, capture alive and combat are the two sibling pages. The walkthrough puts this loop on a calendar. The tier list tells you which posters deserve a long clock.
If a control feels wrong on a pad, look for the direct-control toggle before you blame the horse. Henke already admitted the first stick scheme was clunky. The horse also got a dust trail in that same week of development, which is charming and does not help you pay $10,000.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about bounty hunting, debt, and skills.
Is Bounty Trail click-to-move?
Yes on mouse and keyboard. Henke added a direct-control option for gamepads because click-to-go felt clumsy on a stick.
What do Ride, Stop, Inventory, and Camp do?
Trail travel, halt, supplies, and the camp/sleep menu. Camp is bound with Esc on the screenshots. Do not empty Energy before you open it.
Where is the camp bug workaround?
Demo advice: close the game and check %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\September Games\BountyTrail. Henke patched camp/sleep on 15 June 2026. See demo notes.
Does the game support controllers?
The demo lists full controller support and Xbox controllers, plus four accessibility features.
What does Information mean on the HUD?
It is the intel percent that feeds Convince Bounty To Surrender. Low Information pushes you toward DRAW. Full write-up: capture alive.
