Getting Started with Bounty Trail

Bounty Trail opens in the fall of 1881 with a ruined partnership. Edward Thorne signed a $10,000 loan, then disappeared. September Games gives you four months of game time to pay it. That is the whole pitch, and it should change how you spend the first hour: you are not sightseeing, you are buying time.

This beginner guide assumes you launched the September 1, 2026 Steam release or the earlier demo that covers the first month. Controls live on how to play. Capture math lives on capture alive. Here we stay in the office until the wanted board makes sense. Named posters are listed on the wanted board. The five lands are on the territories map.

The agency office

The office is your hub. A Steam screenshot from the store shows the room on Saturday, October 8, 1881. The header lists Money, Player Level, Experience, and a bounty tally. In that shot the hunter has $3,200.00, is level 11 with 159 XP, and the ledger reads Bounties Hunted 9, Caught 6, Killed 1. You will not start there. You will start broke and under-leveled. The important part is the columns: hunted is not the same as caught, and killed is tracked separately because alive work is the skill engine.

A poster sits on the desk. The example poster is Baldheaded Doom, wanted dead or alive for $600, with a 5-day clock, last seen in Sandy Plains. The right-hand list in the same shot names Doniphald Suppersby, Baldheaded Doom, and Wagon Wheel Joe. Background posters include Harry “Big Head” Bronson. Those names are real. Do not expect this wiki to invent a twenty-name bestiary; the full game advertises 30 bounties across 5 territories, and we only print names the store already showed.

Read four lines on every poster before you click Select:

  • Payout in dollars
  • Day limit (the office text says you have N days to apprehend this villain)
  • Last-seen territory
  • Dead or alive status (they are all dead or alive; the difference is XP, not legality)

Pick the first hunt like a bookkeeper

New hunters grab the loudest nickname. That is how you waste a 3-day clock on a target you cannot talk down. Early on, prefer:

  • A payout you can actually collect before energy collapses
  • A day limit of 5 or more if the territory is new to you
  • A last-seen location you are willing to learn, because fog of war on the trail map is real

Sandy Plains, Rainy Plains, and Gran Pradera are confirmed territories on official posters. Two of the five lands still have no public name. Treat those two as unknown until you ride there. Full roster: wanted board and territories. The tier list ranks hunt types (short clock versus fat purse versus information-friendly), not a fake S-tier of unconfirmed outlaws.

Once you accept a poster, the game moves you onto the trail map. The HUD switches to Day X / Y, a clock, Energy, Gold, and Information. Day 2 / 7 with El Gato Terrible seen to the south-west is one official example. Another shows Day 4 / 6 at the encounter screen, and another shows Day 3 / 3 while you are already kneeling with a rifle. Day limits are not always seven. Count them.

First-hour loop

  1. Accept one poster. Do not chain two in your head.
  2. Ride. Click the map (mouse click-to-go) or use the gamepad movement option described on how to play.
  3. Stop at farms, towns, and anything that looks like a mouth. Steam’s own copy tells you to talk to farmers, look for supplies, and get the lay of the land.
  4. Watch Information. It is a percent. 35% is a bad time to demand a surrender. 53% is the range where the store screenshots still show you hunting.
  5. Camp before Energy is a joke. Demo players reported being unable to select camp options after energy hit zero. Sleep is a mechanic, not a cutscene skip.
  6. When the game says Time to make a choice, you are at the bounty. Convince Bounty To Surrender or DRAW. Read combat if the DRAW line is the only one above 50%.

What not to do on day one

Do not treat trail Gold as agency Money. The trail HUD shows Gold such as 1,50 or 3,00 (European-style decimals in the builds we can see). The office shows Money in dollars with a $ sign. They are related to the economy, but the debt is the office number. The money guide and debt tracker exist so you do not confuse pocket change with the $10,000 note.

Do not skip talking because the map looks empty. Fog hides farms. Sighting text such as “El Gato Terrible has been seen to the South West” is a gift; ride that compass heading and keep collecting Information.

Do not assume the demo save is the full campaign. The demo is the first month. The full game is four months, 30 bounties, multiple endings. If you imported a demo habit of ignoring skills, break it. Alive captures feed the skills list.

After the first return

When you bring someone in, read the ledger. Caught should tick if you talked them down. Killed ticks if you drew. Hunted ticks because you took the job. Then look at XP and level. If a kill paid cash but no meaningful XP, you just taught the next bounty how to beat you.

From here, branch:

Official files, the Steam page, and the studio site sit on the links hub. Specs and the LocalLow save folder are on system requirements.

Your first good hunt is the one you finish with energy left and Information high enough to skip a panic DRAW. Everything else is just dust on the horse.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about bounty hunting, debt, and skills.

How long is a bounty in Bounty Trail?

The poster prints the day limit. Confirmed examples are 5 days (Baldheaded Doom), and trail HUD clocks of 7, 6, and 3 days. Always read Day X / Y.

Who is Edward Thorne?

Your no-good partner who took the $10,000 loan and fled. The Steam page and announcement copy both name him. Revenge is part of the pitch; endings depend on more than one shootout.

Should I kill the first bounty?

Only if Information is too low to surrender. Alive captures grant more XP. See capture alive.

Where do I pick bounties?

The agency office board. Posters list payout, day limit, and last-seen territory. Select with mouse or the on-screen Select prompt.

Is the demo the full game?

No. The demo plays the first month. The full Steam release is dated September 1, 2026, with 30 bounties and multiple endings.
